Excellent firsthand observations. I especially agree that reality is often more nuanced than the narratives surrounding China AI.

Reading your piece, however, left me with a bigger question. You argue that constraints reshape optimization rather than simply slow progress. Do you think this principle extends beyond AI and applies to civilization itself? In other words, could history be viewed as a continuous process of societies rewriting their own constraints, rather than merely adapting to them?

I would be very interested to hear your thoughts, because I suspect this may be the more fundamental story behind the AI race.
