Happy Fourth, Kevin. Thanks for sharing this. Your son was born into good parents. That is much of the battle. What he becomes? The Buffett esque balance you described is really what we strive for (speaking as a parent of two teens, one of whom is about to start college)
Dear Kevin, I deeply respect your profound grasp of the human condition, expressed through your raw and honest introspection of your current circumstances. Your words carry the weight of lived experience, revealing not just the personal truths that having a child brings, but a shared emotional landscape that I believe resonates for all of your readers. You rare authenticity—unflinching and vulnerable—that transforms your reflections into a mirror of our own inner lives, making your insight feel intimate and universally relevant. Never lose your faith in yourself- I've been an immigrant to three countries and the feeling of belonging is a nomadic wander through the idiocies of bias, prejudice and political nonsense. A bit mouthful from me I know but I am impelled to tell you this. Thank you man. Love the the pic of you and your boy. Stay with your craft.
That was a deeply felt, and genuine Reflection on the American Dream you just wrote
Let us all hope this current trend of xenophobia and suspicion is just a bump in the road for people like you who are contributing a tremendous amount to this country, and just want a fair shot for their families, and a more level playing field.
We are all immigrants here and should conduct ourselves as caretakers rather than owners. We need to be mindful of helping others to succeed by keeping the ladder in place, rather than kicking it away once we have used it. You are an example of someone who is doing that.
We are routing for you, and we need you and your family to help the country make it through this "rough patch" with our institutions and our Constitution intact.
To a better place because it has been severely tested and survived.
To use a Chinese idiom: "Jiayo" --keep up the struggle. Your effort will result in success.
Your story is a good reminder of where we all came from!

Very reflective piece! Keep working to protect the promise, Kevin!

Btw, we spent part of our Fourth of July visiting Versailles. If we were going to be in Paris over that holiday , that seemed to be the day to go.
Beautiful piece. Happy 4th and congratulations. From one father to another... we all do the best we can!
